‘We’re a city that’s used to hosting major events; we do this eight times a year,’ Tuscaloosa Mayor Walter Maddox said at the welcoming news conference Thursday afternoon. ‘We know what it’s like to host champions. This is a city that’s filled with championships, and, as you ride around our city, we understand what it takes to be No. Thursday also featured the opening ceremony at the athlete village at the corner of Greensboro Avenue and Jack Warner Parkway and a small downtown parade.
