Her entry into politics was an unsuccessful race for Congress, as a Republican, in a 1967 special election. President Richard Nixon named her to the first of four positions at the United Nations. In 1974, President Gerald Ford appointed her ambassador to Ghana and then White House chief of protocol. President Ronald Reagan appointed her ambassador to Czechoslovakia.
