There are about 500,000 independent drivers nationwide. But its hard to say how many drivers will actually join in this loosely organized shut-down and turn off their engines for a whole week. Filling the gas tanks of a big rig can cost as much as $1,000, about $300 more than it cost this time last year. Thats having a devastating impact on the independent drivers, like Ted Gennick. Most drivers arent reimbursed for their rising fuel bills, so they eat the extra cost.
