Americans know this from experience almost every town in this country has its monuments honoring those who sacrificed their lives in defense of freedom, both at home and abroad. Few have understood this as clearly as the late Pope John Paul II. The United States carries a weighty and far-reaching responsibility, not only for the well-being of its own people, but for the development and destiny of peoples throughout the world.
