Misc: Thumbs Down To NBC (Wimbledon)
Collins, who has covered Wimbledon for The Boston Globe for 40 years, arrived at NBC in 1972 to find it wasn’t even given a booth for its coverage. Collins and on-air partner Jim Simpson had to do post-match voiceovers of taped action “we did a pretty shoddy job.” In 1979, NBC went live with “Breakfast at Wimbledon” despite worrying whether anyone would watch morning tennis. NBC was nervous when tournament officials insisted the Bjorn Borg-Roscoe Tanner final start exactly as the network came on-air, leaving no time to preview action.
